The Hunter Coal Festival is a celebration of the “Hunter community” – a celebration of the co-existence between the people and industries involved in the Hunter’s largest economic force.
The concept of a Coal Festival was first mooted in 2013 and the idea was expanded to stage a series of events which would highlight the many positive benefits of the industry.
“Wouldn’t it be great if we could bring the community and the mining industry together in celebration, instead of the negative focus the industry seems to attract?” was the question asked by the initial organisers.
“The value and contribution of the mining industry goes un-heralded and why not demonstrate to the broader community of NSW and Australia that the industry is very much appreciated and offers so much to so many in terms of jobs, careers, innovation, funding community events and charities and more.”
More than 18 months of planning by local volunteers from across the Hunter, took the Hunter Coal Festival from concept to reality; the festival was geographically spread between Newcastle and Muswellbrook, and included a wide-ranging program of events, such as a trade show, sporting and cultural events, business and networking lunches and dinners, educational sessions and charity fundraisers.
Made possible by many generous sponsors coming on board, the initial festival featured two weeks of intensive activity during the autumn of 2015. It was apparent that the Festival was a success and viewed by the sponsors as delivering major benefits.
The organisers included the Singleton and Muswellbrook Chambers of Commerce and local councils.
A second festival followed in 2016, with some modifications, and it was decided to hold the festivals from that point forward, every two years. In 2018, the festival was again staged – and was arguably the best yet in terms of events and attendances.
The fourth festival will take centre stage October 23 – 31, 2020. A Careers and Innovation Expo, Mining Leaders Lunch and Singleton Community Day form the 2020 festival’s major events with an over-arching theme of “Community + Co-existence + Innovation + Education”.
The Hunter Coal Festival is an initiative of Singleton Business Chamber, in partnership with the Mining Industry and Community. The festival aims to highlight the value of the coal industry in Singleton, the wider Hunter region and the broader Australian community.
